At 26 years old,Peter Njoroge knew many people would question his decision when he announced that he wanted to marry 83-year-old Truphena Asige. Friends, relatives, and even strangers wondered what could bring together two people separated by more than five decades in age.
Sitting beside Truphena one afternoon, Peter calmly shared his reasons.
“People think love is only about age, beauty, or what someone owns,” he said. “For me, it is about peace, kindness, and understanding.”
Peter explained that he first met Truphena while volunteering in his community. What began as simple conversations soon developed into a close friendship. He admired her wisdom, life experience, and the way she treated everyone with respect.
“Whenever I faced challenges, she always had advice that helped me see things differently,” Peter said. “She taught me patience and showed me that happiness comes from appreciating the little things in life.”
According to Peter, many young people rushed into relationships based on appearance or social status. He believed his connection with Truphena was different.
“I found someone who listens to me, encourages me, and genuinely cares about my well-being,” he explained. “That means more to me than anything else.”
Truphena smiled as she listened. She admitted that she never expected such a relationship but appreciated Peter’s sincerity and commitment.
Despite criticism from some members of the community, Peter remained firm in his decision.
“Everyone has the right to choose the person who brings them joy,” he said. “Others may not understand our bond, but they don’t live our lives.”
As the couple continued to spend time together, Peter hoped their story would encourage people not to judge others based solely on age.
“At the end of the day,” he concluded, “respect, companionship, and genuine care are what truly matter.”
