Years after their relationship ended, Director Trevor still had stories that made his friends laugh whenever they met.
One afternoon, as he sipped tea at a roadside café in Nairobi, Director Trevor found himself remembering what he often described as the strictest girlfriend he had ever known. His friends, already familiar with many tales about his former girlfriend Mungai Eve, listened as he insisted that they had not yet heard the most unbelievable one.
According to Director Trevor, while many people described love as sweet, his experience had come with rules and regulations. Mungai Eve had a habit of preparing the most delicious meals in the evening—pilau, fried chicken, chapati, and many other favorites. Yet after cooking, she would carefully place the food in the fridge and lock it.
What made the situation even more remarkable was where she kept the key. Rather than leaving it somewhere accessible, she hid it in her bra, ensuring that no midnight snacking would take place without her approval.
Director Trevor recalled one particular night when hunger woke him after midnight. Remembering that there was chicken in the fridge, he quietly made his way to the kitchen, only to discover a padlock hanging from the refrigerator as though it were protecting a bank vault. Determined to find the key, he spent nearly twenty minutes searching the house. He checked the kitchen, the sitting room, and even under sofa cushions, but the key was nowhere to be found.
Eventually, Mungai Eve woke up and noticed him searching. When she learned that he was looking for the fridge key, she calmly informed him that the food was meant for the following day and that he should simply return to bed.
The memory always left Director Trevor’s friends laughing. He often joked that living with Mungai Eve felt like living in a house where food was available only during official operating hours.
Despite all his complaints, Director Trevor admitted that Mungai Eve was organized and exceptionally good at managing resources. In the end, very little ever went to waste under her watch.
Even years later, Director Trevor liked to say that whenever he saw an unlocked fridge, he felt a strange sense of freedom.
