Kenyan comedian and activist Eric Omondi was released on Monday after spending the weekend in police custody following his arrest by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Omondi’s arrest sparked widespread public concern after he initially claimed on social media that he had been taken by a group of non-uniformed men and was unaware of where he was being taken. The incident quickly attracted attention from supporters, activists, and political leaders who demanded clarity on his whereabouts.
The DCI later confirmed that Omondi had been arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), stating that detectives were investigating offences allegedly linked to recent protests against rising fuel prices in Nairobi. According to the agency, the arrest followed intelligence gathering and formed part of ongoing investigations involving several other suspects connected to the demonstrations.
During his detention, a number of political leaders and supporters voiced concern over the comedian’s arrest. Embakasi East MP Babu Owino publicly stated that he had visited Omondi at the DCI offices and was monitoring the case.
Following his release today, supporters welcomed the development, with many taking to social media to celebrate. Omondi, who has increasingly become known for his activism alongside his entertainment career, has previously participated in demonstrations concerning the cost of living, unemployment, and government policies affecting ordinary Kenyans.
