A fresh political storm swept across Kenya after opposition leaders intensified calls for an impeachment motion against President William Ruto.
The debate dominated social media, political rallies, and television discussions, with critics arguing that Parliament should hold the Head of State accountable over various national concerns. Supporters of the President, however, dismissed the calls as politically motivated and lacking sufficient grounds.
Amid the growing speculation, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula reportedly addressed the issue during a public event, sending a strong message to those pushing for impeachment.
“You cannot impeach Ruto. That idea is dead on arrival. Bring it and I will ensure he is not impeached,” he is quoted as saying.
The remarks immediately sparked heated reactions across the country. Ruto’s allies welcomed the statement, arguing that the President still enjoyed significant support within Parliament and that any impeachment attempt would fail to secure the required numbers.
Opposition leaders, on the other hand, criticized the remarks, claiming that the Speaker should remain neutral and allow any constitutional process to proceed independently if such a motion were ever tabled.
Political analysts noted that even if an impeachment motion were introduced, it would face a difficult path through both the National Assembly and the Senate, where political alliances often determine the outcome of major decisions.
As the debate continued online, supporters and critics of the government engaged in fierce exchanges, turning the impeachment discussion into one of the country’s most talked-about political topics.
For now, the issue remains largely political rhetoric, but the Speaker’s bold declaration has added a new twist to an already tense national conversation.
